Sealants are highly effective in preventing tooth decay and cavities on your molars and premolars due to the grooves on these teeth. Sealants can protect the teeth through the cavity-prone years of youth, ages 6 to 14. The process of applying sealants is fast and can be done at a regularly scheduled cleaning.
The sealants are applied after the teeth are thoroughly cleaned and dried. A liquid solution is put on the surface of the teeth and cured using a special curing light. Sealants act as a barrier on the teeth and protect them from plaque and acids. While the sealant remains intact on the tooth, the surface will be protected.
Regular brushing, flossing, professional cleanings and exams are still required after sealants are applied.
